Bears & Bucks

Kodiak Island is home to the legendary Kodiak brown bear. It’s not uncommon to see a bear or many bears on your week hunt on Kodiak. Brown bears roam all over Alaska, and are simply a part of the Alaskan hunting experience. Though we haven’t had anyone get injured by a bear, and attacks are very rare but there are a few guide line we all need to when hunting in the bears back yard.

No matter where you hunt you should always hunt with a partner, but it is very important on Kodiak because the bear’s are more bold and look for a easier dinner. So keep your hunting partner in your sight and when your dressing out your deer in the field do it quick and keep your eyes open on your surroundings. Most of the bears that you see, when they realize that you are human they will bolt out of sight. There is that one bear that does think that it’s a lot easier to take your deer then to spend all his energy on getting his own deer. If this happens don’t get hurt ” Let him have it”.

If  you are looking to put some of the best tasting deer in your freezer or if you are looking for that once in a lifetime trophy black tail. Kodiak Island consistently produces Alaska’s biggest black tail deer.

The average weight of Alaska black tail deer is 90 to 120 pound range, but the deer on Kodiak are much larger, they can reach weights of 175 and even some pushing 200 pounds. Plus the high nutrition of  Kodiak’s vegetation help the black tall grow large antlers.
